Background: Blundell’s School is a very impressive school, with its lovely grounds, excellent facilities and a prestigious 400 year history.
The Blundell’s Preparatory School (3.5 – 11 year olds) is a school ranging from 270 to 300 pupils. It is an independent school situated on a wonderfully extensive site in beautiful Devon countryside on the outskirts of Tiverton, within easy access to the M5 and North Devon Link road. It is administered under the auspices of the Blundell’s Charitable Trust. A good proportion of the children joins the school in Nursery and then progress through the school, although children do join at a variety of ages. Although the Prep school has strong links with the senior school and shares some sporting and theatrical facilities, it has its own staff and management team and operates as a separate school. Children will sit entrance examinations for Blundell’s and other schools and most flow through to the Blundell’s Senior School, (about 85%). They receive “priority entry” if this is their choice, but the school also prepares children at eleven years of age for a variety of other senior schools.
The Blundell’s Senior School (11 – 18 year olds) actively encourages all pupils to work towards high levels of achievement. Blundell's has an extensive range of opportunities including a range of awards to reflect sporting, artistic, dramatic or musical achievement. The School’s programmes are adapted to give a wide vision and scholars are encouarged to demonstrate a lively interest in the events designed to stretch them. Energy and an enquiring mind are vital to the fulfilment of potential.
Blundell's has long had a reputation for sporting prowess and prides itself on the spirit in which it plays its sport. Sports on offer include, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Canoeing, Cricket, Cross Country, Fencing, Fives, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Riding, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting, Soccer, Squash, Swimming and Tennis. This is complemented by a wide range of outdoor pursuits. The most important objective of Blundell’s school sporting programme is to cover the interests and needs of all boys and girls, whilst promoting excellence.
Fortunately, Blundell's is well endowed with the facilities and staff needed to fulfil this objective. The Physical Education and Games activities are designed to complement one another. Recent highlights have been two Rosslyn Park Sevens finals, two England U19 Rugby Players, a National Young Cricketer of the Year, a River Axe canoeing champion, the Devon Schools' Fly Fishing Cup and an International girl Fencer. A new floodlit Astroturf pitch, used mainly for hockey and tennis, was opened in 1996, to add to an already impressive range of facilities.
Ken Whites Assistance: Ken Whites has a long standing relationship with Blundell’s School stretching back over 30 years. Services have included, general signage, honours boards and also vehicle sign writing on the School’s ten mini buses.
Head Master, Mr Ian Davenport, BA was appointed in 2004 - previously the Senior Housemaster at Radley College, Mr Davenport was educated at Bloxham School and Durham University where he read Politics. At this time it was decided that the school was to re-brand as an essential step forward to reflect the modern style of education and state-of-the-art facilities. Over the last 3 – 4 years there has been an extensive refurbishment programme including the addition of new buildings at the Prep School. Ken Whites worked closely with the School’s designer on the re-brand and the high quality, bespoke signage has received positive feedback from students, staff, parents and prospective parents.
Outcome: The relationship between Blundell’s School and Ken Whites has been strengthened having worked hand in hand with the new branding. The installation of high profile, high quality signage has further enhanced the reputation and image of Blundell’s School reflecting the school’s modern ethos, yet still maintaining traditional values.
Director of Development, Paddy Armstrong says, “First impressions are so important, particularly for a school of Blundell’s standing. With its long history, the school signage had become outdated and archaic and as it is all about image, it was decided that the extensive refurbishment programme should include the installation of high quality signage. Although the School has a long history with Ken Whites and we prefer to deal with local suppliers, it is imperative in my role to show due diligence. I, therefore, approached three companies, including national to quote for the works. Ken Whites came up with the most sensible price and as we have absolute trust in their abilities and know they are very easy to deal with, they were awarded the contract. I am delighted to say that they also came in on time and on budget!”
